Across Britain people are spending more money on vegan products and plant-based diets are trending online, so reports the BBC.
So what lies behind this phenomenal rise? Well, it seems there are a range of reasons: a total of 49% of British adults surveyed recently stated they were interested in cutting down their meat consumption for health reasons. Animal welfare, environmental concerns and weight management are also big motivators. (Source: Lightspeed/Mintel Survey of 1,040 British Adults as quoted by the BBC).
The top five most-searched questions on Google in the UK ask what veganism is and what the arguments are for an against cutting out animal products.
According to analysts, young women are driving the growth of the vegan movement, and interest in vegetarian and vegan products shows no sign of slowing down.
And, of course it almost goes without saying that social media has had a big part to play in the rise of the plant-based, vegan lifestyle. Celebrities like Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus and Ellen DeGeneres are some of the well-known figures who don’t eat animal products, while #vegan has more than 61 million posts listed on Instagram.
“Social media has brought veganism to the forefront of customer’s minds, and the mainstream. It’s not seen any more as a choice for life, but as a choice for one meal, one moment, for one or two days a week,” says Giles Quick, director at market researcher Kantar Worldpanel.
Flexitarianism, part-time vegetarianism or veganism is becoming more and more popular. This January, more than 168,000 people pledged to go vegan for the first month of the year, under the Veganuary campaign.
